Bio Below!
Evelyn Marsh is a doctor that has recently finished her residency at a local hospital. She decided to take a short break before looking for a new job to focus on herself and possibly find love. When she came across an ad for Valerie Mayfield’s Bachelorette Challenge, Evelyn thought it was the chance at love she was looking for! Even if she and Valerie are not meant to be, it would be a nice change of pace before going back to work.
Evelyn spends her spare time cooking up a storm in her kitchen. Friends and family love coming over when she has been cooking, since it is always really tasty. It would probably come as a surprise to you then that her favorite food is Mac ‘n’ Cheese. You can do a lot with it whether it is just some boxed stuff or a fancy one made from scratch.

A Kid From Pallet Town...
I’m very excited to be at the start of Generation Three - a generation where a lot of things changed, so much so that a lot of fans consider Gen3 a kind of reset for the series.
While Generation Two really felt like it was what Generation One was always intended to be; running on the same engine but with all the bits that restrictions in time/budget/hardware constraints forced them to leave out the first time around, with Gen3, there are a whole slew of new mechanics - many of which are still fundamental to the series right up to the current games. By far the biggest leap forward however, is the hardware upgrade.
Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald were all released on the 32-bit Game Boy Advance, the successor to the classic 8-bit Game Boy/Game Boy Colour, and the first significant upgrade Nintendo’s handheld system in over 15 years. Fortunately, I already own a couple of Game Boy Advance SP consoles as this is how I was playing the old Gen1 and 2 games, since the GBA is fully backwards compatible for GB/GBC games (except for when it comes to trading, dammit!). This time, all I needed was the games themselves.
In Gen3, the save files are finally stored in on-board memory which is great news for the longevity of each of my play-throughs, but the cartridges do still have a battery backup to keep track of the real-world clock function. Although the Day/Night night cycle doesn’t make a reappearance in Gen3 (why, Game Freak, why?!) , there are some time-based events that rely on this, so I decided to play it safe and go with refurbished copied that have a new battery installed.
Despite all these changes, the overall structure of your adventure is familiar. Your protagonist character is a 10 year-old called either Brandon or May - depending on the gender you select - who has recently moved to Little Bark Town. Here you meet another tree-based Professor (oh hai, Professor Birch) who provides you with a starter pokémon for your journey. Then it is off to challenge the eight gyms, earn the badges, beat the Elite Four, and defeat the champion...blah, blah, blah. This is the same old routine so I don’t think anyone needs this explained all over again. The leaps forward in the franchise are in the deeper mechanics and the new pokémon, not in messing with the overall basic premise.
Let’s just get going. Once I pick my starter, that is.
The ‘I herd you liek mudkipz’ meme was so prevalent that I was well aware of it years ago, way back before I ever started this challenge. This meme seems have spawned from a Deviant Art group dedicated to fan-art of the Gen3 Water-type starter; Mudkip. I remember seeing it several times during the mid-2000s, officially making Mudkip the first Generation Three pokémon that I was ever aware of. With that honour, I was always going to choose it.
There was some stiff competition, however. It is rare for any of the starter pokémon to be bad, and Gen3 has another strong line up. The Fire-type starter is Torchic, which eventually evolves into the Fire/Fighting-type, Blaziken - a giant fighting chicken. This is an odd choice if you are trying to distance your franchise from the ‘pokémon as a virtual version of cock fighting’ analogy, but Blaziken is pretty cool either way. I’m also a fan of Treeko, the Gecko-based Grass-type, but Mudkip definitely wins out. I think we are all well aware by now that I have a soft spot for derpy-looking Water-type pokémon, with Slowbro, Psyduck, and Quagsire all featuring in my Top 10 Kanto, and Top 10 Johto pokémon lists.
I named my female Mudkip, Puddleglum, after the Marshwiggle in the C.S. Lewis book ‘The Silver Chair’, from the Chronicles of Narnia series, due to Mudkips habitat of marshes and swamps.
Together we were now ready to dive into Generation Three - starting with Pokémon Ruby!
